Southern kitchens beyond the farmhouse
Farmhouse styleβall that shiplap and white paintβis finally losing its grip. People are tired of kitchens that look like a stage set. We're seeing a move toward darker woods and actual color, driven by a need for rooms that feel like they belong to a specific person rather than a catalog.
Southern kitchens have always been cramped, busy hubs for canning and hosting. That history of making do with what's nearby is still there, but it's showing up in different ways now, like using local soapstone instead of imported marble.
The best designs right now ignore the old rules. I've seen kitchens that mix high-end smart appliances with 1940s pantry doors. It's less about a 'look' and more about what actually works for a Tuesday night dinner.
